Health and Physical Course Offerings 2012-2013

HEALTH EDUCATION 1
1 Quarter      Grade 9      1.25 credits

Health 1 will encourage students to examine their lifestyles, select short and long-term goals and make plans to achieve and maintain good health. Students will become aware of the responsibility they have for their own health and well being. Health I will provide current facts in the following areas: Mental Health, Nutrition, Substance Awareness, Family Life and HIV/AIDS. This course will give students the opportunity to learn to differentiate between healthful and harmful behaviors in order to develop an understanding of the effects of behaviors on the health of the whole person. Health I will encourage students to practice the basic problem-solving approach by doing the following: recognize the health problem; identify ways to solve the problem; apply information obtained from various sources.

HEALTH EDUCATION 2 (Driver Education)
1 Quarter      Grade 10      1.25 credits

Health 2 provides students with the opportunity to gain skills necessary to cope with health-related problems in a world that is constantly changing. Students will understand that they have a responsibility to others as well as to themselves. They will develop an understanding of the value of interpersonal relationships. Topics discussed in this course include: Stress; Depression; Suicide Prevention; Family Life; Assault Prevention; Sexually Transmitted Diseases; Nutrition; First Aid and CPR.

HEALTH EDUCATION 3
1 Quarter      Grade 11      1.25 credits

This course acquaints the student with state and federal laws with regard to the operation of a motor vehicle. In addition, the student is taught about the automobile itself, its working parts, the philosophy of driving an automobile, courtesy on the road, and required insurance coverage. Substance awareness and the relation between chemical abuse problems and driving are included.

HEALTH EDUCATION 4
1 Quarter      Grade 10      1.25 credits

Health 4 emphasizes the nature, importance and skills of relationships. Course topics will include: Gender Issues; Love; Marriage; Childbirth; Parenting; Substance Use and Abuse; Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV/AIDS; and research of a variety of mental and physical illnesses.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 4

Required subjects. The high school physical education program will consist of a variety of well rounded activities. Students are assigned to a teacher and will remain with that teacher throughout the school year. Students will be exposed to two or three lifetime or team activities per marking period. These lifetime activities will include tennis, cross-training, power walking/jogging, physical fitness, weight training, aerobics and yoga. Team activities will include flag football, speedball, volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, mass games, badminton, project adventure and problem solving activities. A pre and post physical fitness test is administered quarterly. The test is designed to challenge the individual student to improve his/her physical condition. A written assessment is given at the end of each activity period testing the student‘s knowledge of the subject. Included in the assessment are quarterly health related themes that focus on important issues. This includes rules, regulations, history and benefits. The final grade for the marking period is based on student preparation, participation, fitness as well as cognitive and skill assessments.
